    If I look at 7/12 as 5/12 + 2/12 is that an example of “changing the form”?

    Yes, it is! I find it’s important to highlight for students so that they see benefits of ‘unsimplified’ or ‘complicated’ form, rather thinking changing the form only means to simplify.
