Lion’s Prey

Goal: Think like a mathematician! Read the problem multiple times.

A lion surveying his surroundings from a tall tree saw a horse half a kilometer to the south. He also spotted a giraffe 1 kilometer to the west. The lion jumped from the tree to chase one of these animals, and both the horse and the giraffe ran away from the lion with maximum speed.

A lion can run 200 meters in 9 seconds, a horse can run 200 meters in 10 seconds, and a giraffe can run 200 meters in 14 seconds. The lion went after the animal that would take him less time to catch. [Which animal did her pursue?]
