Log Ride

Goal: Think like a mathematician! Read the problem multiple times.

A theme park has a log ride that can hold 12 people. They also have a weight limit of 1500 lbs per log for safety reasons. If the average adult weighs 150 lbs, the average child weighs 100 lbs and the log itself weighs 200 lbs, the ride can operate safely if the inequality

150A + 100C + 200 ≤ 1500

is satisfied (A is the number of adults and C is the number of children in the log ride together). There are several groups of children of differing numbers waiting to ride. Group one has 4 children, group two has 3 children, group three has 9 children, group four has 6 children while group five has 5 children.

If 4 adults are already seated in the log, which groups of children can safely ride with them?

    This was the first task I used for the Three Reads Routine in my 7th grade special education classroom. The students were very excited about the problem and wanted to solve it right away! (I wish I had left the question off of this one). Students did a great job talking about what the problem was about after their first read, but still really wanted to answer clearly by this response, “It’s about how many kids are able to sit int he log ride with the adults.” I quickly realized how important this routine was to slow students down and have them spend time thinking about the problem as they are so driven to solve and be correct that miss important information.
